July 20th, 2003 Stanton and Platte Center, NE
Without question this was the most explosive supercell formation I have ever experienced.
I can confirm 2 tornadoes--possibly 3-- touchdowns. The tornado near Stanton was on the ground for about 10 minutes.
The life cycle of this tornado was impressive.
Prior to this I saw about a 5 minute period of VERY impressive funnel clouds.
From reviewing my video, one of these appears to have also very briefly touched down. I called in this report to Hastings for relay to Omaha NWS. Shortly after my report the first tornado warning was issued.
The Stanton tornado started at a nearly transparent tube with a funnel above it.
It grew from this into a beautiful cone tornado.
The Platte Center tornado had one of the most beautiful rope outs I've ever seen.
Misc facts from this chase:
The tornado maintained cloud base connection until it
vanished .
At one point someone drove by hanging out the car
window yelling "oh my God just look at that"
At another point of my video you hear someone pull up
and ask me "is that one of them tornado funnels"
This was as the tornado was clearly on the ground.
Another person drove up --facing the tornado--and
asked me WHAT I was looking at!!
